Autoflowering cannabis owes its defining trait to Cannabis ruderalis, a small, hardy subspecies native to Russia and Central Asia. Breeders create autoflowering indica seeds by crossing ruderalis with indica lines and then selecting offspring that keep the automatic bloom while regaining resin content and flavour. Plants carrying this trait begin to flower after a set number of weeks, regardless of day length. The adaptation evolved in regions where summers are too short for a light-dependent cycle.
