Traditional sativa varieties are known for long maturation periods that limit where they can be grown. Breeders produce fast flowering sativa seeds by crossing sativa lines with early-finishing indica or with autoflowering parents, then selecting offspring that keep sativa characteristics while ripening sooner. The resulting plants remain photoperiod-dependent, meaning they still bloom in response to shortening days. This separates them from true autoflowering types, which begin flowering according to age alone.
